Felting Supplies Recommendations!
Wondering what felting supplies to get? Here are my favourites!
Needles: I get my needles from Sarafina Fiber Art or Living Felt. I do most of my work with #38 star needles from Sarafina. You can also get them from other felting supply stores online or near you! I don’t recommend getting needles from Amazon as they are often too thick to work well.
Needle holders: I really like the Clover pen needle felting tool. I also use Felt Alive needles, which have a rubber handle permanently attached to them. The only downside is if you break the needle, you have to throw away the handle too. I’m starting to have problems with tendonitis and hand/arm pain, and needle holders really help with that.
Wool: My two favourite places to buy wool are: Sarafina Fiber Art, mainly their “core wool” or from Grey Fox Felting, their batting. There are lots of other places to buy wool too, maybe even some shops where you live! Check out my resources on where to get wool near you: Brick and Mortar stores or Online Stores. For needle felting, choose wool that has a shorter staple length and is a bit rough, possibly a blend of different wools. It’ll be easier to work with than merino, for example.
Wash-away stabiliser: I use two different brands. If you want to draw a design, try New Brothered, if you want to print one, try Sulky’s stick and stitch printable wash-away stabilizer.
Pressed wool felt: I get 1.2mm pressed wool felt from The Felt Pod in various colours. It’s great to use as a background for fiber paintings or patches.
Felting pad: The cheapest option for a felting pad is a grouting sponge from any local hardware store. Here’s an example. You can also get a foam felting pad, or a wool felting pad. If you want a large pad for clothing or bigger fiber paintings, here are some huge foam ones. I recommend AVOIDING the extremely compressed felting pads such as these ones. They are too firm and cause needles to break.
Felting machine: I’ve had the Solar Bee felting machine from Felting machine krd since spring 2024 and it’s still working great!! I love it! I use it mostly for flatwork and on thicker sweaters.
Wet felting sprinkler: You can get these from most felting supply stores. Here’s one on Sarafina Fiber Art. It helps distribute the water evenly over your project.
